Balloons and Birds

It has been a busy month so far.  Warmer temperatures (17 out of 20 days warmer than normal so far in March). We have been hiking and walking a lot. trying for those 10,000 Fitbit steps each day!

We got up very early one Saturday morning and headed to Pahrump for their annual Hot Air Balloon Festival.
Caught a nice sunrise on the way.

The launch was scheduled for 7 am.  They should have said SHARP.  The first balloon went up when we were on approach.  (We failed to calculate that we had to drive all the way through Pahrump to reach the park were the event was being held.)

We were really really impressed at the number of balloons at the festival.

The first balloon up!

There were a bunch of these little aircraft buzzing around as the balloons were getting ready.

We watched them inflate two Wells Fargo balloons. Very cool.

Loved this truck as much as the egg shaped balloon.

I forgot to share this photo after our trip to the ghost town of St. Thomas.  We had to pass through the Valley of Fire on our way to St Thomas.  We have been to the Valley of Fire several times but never stopped when we saw this sign:

It's a bit hard to make out.  Not easy to get a good shot at this time of day. But kind of cool to see a 150 million year old tree!

A return trip to the Henderson Bird Sanctuary was on the agenda for March 12.  Time to look for some migrating birds.  It was a beautiful morning.  We added a few birds to our list.

This American Avocet seems pretty good at the Tree Pose

American Avocet again. Now that's what I call a great beak. Styling!

Common Gallinule - Not sure I would say common.

 Greater Yellowlegs

Northern Harrier - The white tail band is an identifier.

Ross's Goose. Smaller than a Snow Goose.

Spring was in the air and this Canadian Goose was showing off and causing a ruckus!(She didn't really seem impressed.)

Dan caught this Redhead with his new camera.

A male Cinnamon Teal was floating around as well.

Ever on the lookout we all saw non-bird activity.

Started this post with a sunrise must end with a Nevadan sunset!

We just love all there is to do in and around Las Vegas.  We love Vermont but new adventures are good for the soul!

It's all about the journey!

Happy Spring. Love Nancy and Dan
