No Aliens - Birds, lots of birds

Turns out the only restaurant on the Extraterrestrial Highway is closed for renovations until after Christmas so we will make that trip another day.

Instead we headed to the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. There were many ducks in the area today. Many we have seen in Vermont.  A few we added to our life list.

Cinnamon Teal

Snowy Egret
Mallard
Great Egret
Bufflehead
Green Winged Teal
Ringed Billed Gull
Immature Western Grebe (I think)
Snow Geese
Northern Shoveler
New Arrivals
White Crowned Sparrow (I think)
American Coot
Immature Black Crowned Night Heron
Sign of the day!

Gambel's Quail
Just as we were leaving the viewing area we spied several Gambel's Quail.  Unfortunately one of them didn't make it as the Swainson's Hawk pictured below thought it was lunch time.  The hawk ran into this fence before he finally managed to get his quail. Not sure if you can see it but he has a bird pinned down in the photo.

Bird of Prey! Swainson's Hawk
I tried to put this little video under the Northern Shovelers but the video wouldn't cooperate! We saw this circling behavior in several locations. Funny!

Debbie at the front desk was very helpful getting us started on our adventure today.

And John helped us identify a couple of birds when we returned to the main building. We are planning to visit again throughout the year.  Dan wants a new camera.  We had camera envy many times today.

My little camera takes pretty good pictures!

Happy holidays everyone.

It's all about the journey!

December 19.  Just sayin!

Love, Nancy and Dan
